What’s that dot on the horizon? It’s the Whaka 100, and it’s approaching sure and steady. Regardless of what distance you’re in, you’ll likely have chosen something that will test your riding skills and fitness. It’s time to get prepared, learn, and train.

Prepare:
COURSE PRACTICE

The best way to know what you’re up against is to face it. We recommend visiting the Whakarewarewa trails at least once to scope out your course, in part or its entirety, so you know where you’ll shine and where to improve. The course maps will be released on 1 August, or alternatively, ride a previous year's course found on Trailforks

Learn:
SKILLS COACHING

Topping up your bike handling skills is a great way to maximise your enjoyment of the event. Giving yourself the confidence to ride the A-lines for speed, taking the most efficient routes down the descents to save your energy for the next climb, and knowing how you’ll cross the stream at the end, are all important.

Hit up your local MTB skills coaching, or get in touch with Tuned Rotorua - led by DH champion, and local, Louis Hamilton, where you can hone your skills on October’s course.

Train:

FITNESS AND MINDSET

Don’t overlook the importance of fitness training. Going for more frequent and longer rides goes some way to training, but doing it in a smart, structured way is the key to success.

Look to get set up on a training plan, speak with a PT, or talk to our official training partners, Team CP. Richard and the team are experts on endurance events including the Whaka 100, and have a specific Whaka 100 training plan, one-on-one coaching, and weekly, coach-led team Zwift sessions.

You can grab $5 off your training plan setup fees by purchasing it on entry or by going via the Manage My Entry portal.

Good luck!
